REMEMBERING GOJIRA
HARUO NAKAJIMA
(1929 – 2017)

Affectionately known as “Mr. Godzilla,” Haruo Nakajima was a suit actor for twelve consecutive films including the original 1954 Gojira. Famous Monsters hosted Nakajima-san last year at Alien Con, and we will miss him very much. He was always very gracious and enthusiastic about meeting his fans and attended many conventions in the US. We invite Godzilla fans to come celebrate the life and legacy of Mr. Haruo Nakajima at the Famous Monsters Halloween.

In a private ceremony an hour southeast of Tokyo blessings poured in from Tsuburaya Productions, publications, convention organizers, the aforementioned Ultraman, Hiroko Sakurai (ULTRA Q, ULTRAMAN), Godzilla suit actors Kenpachiro Satsuma, Tsutomu Kitagawa, and Mizuho Yoshida; Godzilla designer Shinichi Wakasa, and toy company artist M1GO. After the Japanese priest rang the last temple bell and the smoke of incense had burned  away, the shell of the soul of Godzilla was gently adorned with countless flowers by loving family and close friends. To the left of Nakajima lay one of his favorite hats proclaiming his position as one of the most Famous Monsters of Filmland, something he was very proud of.

FUN FACT

When Nakajima first donned the King of Monsters costume in the original film, he had only acted in several samurai films. Due to his strength and endurance as a stuntman, he was the perfect choice to wear the nearly 200-pound suit. Upon being given the role, he went to a Tokyo zoo to observe animals in their movements and interactions to help him in his depiction of the atomic monster.

MAN OF 1000 MONSTERS

Nakajima reprised his now-iconic role in no less than eleven Godzilla movies, including KING KONG VS. GODZILLA and GODZILLA VS MOTHRA. He also donned the suits of many other kaiju through the years, including Mothra, Baragon, and Gaira, as well as several monsters from the ULTRAMAN series of the late 1960s. His last portrayal of Godzilla was in 1972’s GODZILLA VS. GIGAN.

GETTING PERSONAL
