Famous Monsters Halloween Convention is proud to present its very own monster makeup competition!
Practical effects will never die. There was a period during the 1980s when this seemed uncertain — filmmakers got computer-happy and began to fix everything in post production, giving rise to the CGI craze of the 1990s. But in recent years, directors like Guillermo del Toro and shows like SyFy’s FACE OFF have brought the craft of monster makeup back to the forefront, and Famous Monsters wants to find the next great effects artist!
with prizes provided by
Oscar and multiple Emmy award winning makeup artist Michael Westmore!
Since 1917, the Westmore family dynasty has been providing Hollywood with makeup movie magic. Part of the third generation of Westmores, Michael has worked on everything from THE MUNSTERS to ROCKY to STAR TREK. He is also the presiding mentor on the reality competition show FACE OFF, and will be the main judge of the Pretty Ugly Special FX Makeup Contest!
A $10,000 scholarship to BLUSH School of Makeup!
Everyone who is accepted into the contest will receive SFX DVD tutorial sets, a Kryolan alcohol palette, Westmore FX silicone adhesive, and Famous Monsters swag!
1. Each contestant will have until the specified end time per day to do their makeup. Nothing can be pre-applied or pre-painted, although you may bring in prosthetic pieces that you’ve already made. Please provide your own model.
2. The judges will view all the pieces that have been done at the end of each day (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), ask each contestant a few questions, take notes, and give a score (the contestants will not be given their scores). Multiple contestants may be working on the same day or at the same time, depending on the number of entrants.
3. After each makeup is completed, a photographer will take pictures so they can be displayed on the stage screen on the last day as the judges are giving feedback.
4. On Sunday, after the judges have seen everyone’s pieces and pictures have been taken, all the artists will come back for final feedback from the judges and the awarding of the prizes.
